The original concept for Sex Axe was to be an album of x-rated Blues songs. I can't draw (obviously) so I asked Dan Clowes to illustrate it but he said that his "...album cover days are over"

Once I secured the services of the great Jim Starlin I decided to clean it up a little.I went for a wrap around cover and gave this to Starlin as a rough concept. The idea was to use the Pete Bagge cover art from "Blasted" as the band playing in the background.

I got this rough first draft back from Starlin.  He changed the angle and added HIMSELF behind the bar! Notice the girl (let's call her "Space Cakes") has a gun in her left hand (down at her side). I drew the hand in the air and asked him to change it (The GALL)

Here are the finished pencils. Starlin added the scarf in her hand and came up with the idea to have the Bagge band on a big screenTV. At this point the album was more rock than blues so I came up with the name Sex Axe.

Then I sent the pencil art over to my old friend and veteran DC and Marvel inker Mick Gray to do the finished inks. Not only is he a master inker but a also rockin' singer/songwriter/guitar player! listen to his song "Muny" on the CD!

Then I photshopped in the band and tried to color it myself. The result was this sickening vomit inducing mess. After looking at this I decided I needed to enlist one more pro. Who better than the man who worked over Starlin all the way back in the 70's, Steve Oliff. Click on the home page to see the magnificent finished product. It looks GREAT in person. You should get one.
